David Carr, Ironman Triathlete
I'm a 41-year-old IT professional in Jacksonville, Florida. My educational background is
in physical anthropology and neurobiology, though I regularly take college courses these
days solely because they happen to interest me at the moment. My professional background
ranges from law enforcement to software development. I also spent several fun-filled years
as a DJ in north Florida clubs. Currently I am a contract consultant responsible for
developing business operations and evaluating processes for improvement opportunities for
an internet startup in the consumer health and wellness space.
I'm an endurance athlete and have run numerous marathons and half-marathons around the
country. I'm also a running coach with Team In Training, helping volunteers train for an
endurance event while they raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I began
competing in triathlons in 2009, completing at least one triathlon of every standard
distance from the fast Sprint up to a full Ironman that year.
My wife and I married in March 2008 and live in the Fort Caroline area of Jacksonville.
We have a Boston Terrier named Clancy. He's currently unemployed.
I will be participating again this year in the BikeMS: Cycle to the Shores (formerly
known as MS-150) to raise money for the MS Society along the way. The event starts in
St. Augustine and travels 85 miles down to Daytona, where we overnight before heading
back on a 65-mile route the following day. I've participated in this event with my
friend, Chris, and a couple of his friends, the last couple of years and we've really
had a great time.
I will be riding in memory of my grandmother, who struggled with MS prior to her death
in 1976. Thank you to all of my friend and family who have helped me raise more than
$2,500 for this important cause over the past two years.
I will be returning to Wilmington, NC to race in the Beach2Battleship Ironman Triathlon
again. I had such a great experience at this event in 2009 that it just didn't make sense
to race another venue. My goal this year is time-based (the first time I merely hoped to
complete the event) and I will be shooting to come in under 12:00.
For those of you not familiar with the event, it consists of a 2.4-mile ocean swim, a 112-mile
bike course, followed by a 26.2-mile marathon run. My goals this year consist of swimming more
than 500 miles, cycling more than 5,000 miles, and running more than 2,500 miles.
